Fraud in Freelancing: Fake Clients and Fake Jobs on Upwork & Fiverr

Two young professionals working on laptops in a modern cafe setting.

How to avoid scams that target freelancers with false projects, stolen work, and identity theft.

Freelancing has unlocked global opportunity — allowing talented individuals to work from anywhere, with clients across the world. But with this freedom has come a growing risk: freelancer-targeted scams. Platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer.com, and even LinkedIn are now crawling with fake clients, fake job offers, and dangerous traps that can cost freelancers their time, work, money, and even their identity.

In this post, we’ll explore the common fraud schemes on freelance platforms, how to spot red flags, and how you can protect yourself before you lose more than you bargained for.

🚩 1. Fake Job Offers Meant to Steal Your Time or Identity

Some scammers pose as clients offering high-paying jobs with vague but attractive descriptions. Once a freelancer shows interest, the fraud begins:

  • They ask you to work outside the platform (WhatsApp, Telegram, or email)
  • They send fake contracts with requests for personal info (ID cards, banking info, photos)
  • They claim the project is “urgent” but you must first complete a free “trial task”
  • After you submit work, they disappear — or worse, use your identity for fraud

These jobs are not real. Their goal is to:

  • Steal your work without paying
  • Collect your documents for identity theft
  • Get you to install malicious files or software

🎭 2. Stolen Work Disguised as “Test Assignments”

One of the oldest scams: you’re asked to complete a “test” before being hired. But you never hear back. The client has:

  • Received your free work
  • Either resells it or presents it as their own
  • Often runs the same scam with dozens of freelancers

Red flag: The client avoids hiring through the platform or has no verified history. Real clients usually pay even for small test tasks, or hire for a short, paid trial period.

💸 3. Fake Payment Promises or Refund Traps

Some clients manipulate the payment process. For example:

  • They “hire” you, then cancel the contract right before submitting payment
  • Or, they pay you a small amount, ask for a larger “refund” due to a “mistake”
  • Others send fraudulent PayPal payments that later bounce

On platforms like Fiverr or Upwork, once money is withdrawn, it’s gone. And if you accept off-platform payments via PayPal, you could lose protection and even be held liable.

🧾 4. Impersonation and Identity Theft of Freelancers

Some scammers copy legitimate freelancer profiles — complete with portfolio samples, bios, and even names. Then they:

  • Apply for jobs under your identity
  • Trick clients and destroy your reputation
  • Use your ID documents (sent in good faith) for fake accounts and money laundering

Protect yourself by watermarking work samples, and never sending ID or bank info outside of official platforms.

🔧 5. Tech Support & File Sharing Scams

Scammers might:

  • Ask you to install software to “better collaborate” (malware in disguise)
  • Send infected files pretending they’re the project brief
  • Ask for remote access to your PC via tools like AnyDesk or TeamViewer

This is never okay. No real client will require you to bypass your security, especially on freelance platforms where chat, file sharing, and collaboration tools already exist.

🕵️‍♀️ 6. How to Spot a Fake Client or Scam Job

Use this checklist before engaging:

✅ Does the client have verified payment?
✅ Do they have past reviews and work history?
✅ Are they keeping all communication on-platform?
✅ Are they rushing or asking you to skip steps?
✅ Are they offering too much money for too little work?
✅ Are they asking for free samples or personal documents?

🛡️ How to Stay Safe as a Freelancer

  • Stay on-platform: Upwork, Fiverr, and similar sites offer at least some protection.
  • Never work for free unless you decide to — and even then, keep it small.
  • Avoid file downloads or software unless you’ve verified the source.
  • Use watermarks on visual samples.
  • Report suspicious activity to the platform immediately.
  • Keep communication professional and clear, and trust your instincts.
